NOAA satellites helped rescue 295 people around the United States on land or sea in 2010, with 180 of them on the water.

Fishermen and boaters with emergency beacons send signals that bounce off NOAA satellites and relay the information to the Coast Guard.

Those who don’t have emergency beacons like EPIRBs get stranded and may not survive. That happened in the Gulf off the Tampa Bay area two years ago.

Florida ranked second in the nation in overall rescues on land or sea last year with 37, compared to 77 for Alaska.
