As GPS has become mainstream in our society Law Enforcement agencies have started to use GPS in various ways to more effectively enforce the law and cut cost. The Law is unclear in the use of GPS for Law Enforcement agencies in many cases. Courts have not ruled how GPS can be used in day to day operations of Law Enforcement in many cases. The issue is not clarified at this point. Some people think using GPS to track suspects is a violation of their privacy rights.

Law Enforcement attaches GPS devices to suspect’s cars to track their movements and in many cases have located crime scenes in this manner. GPS devices also have been used to prove peoples innocence. Courts have accepted and rejected evidence gathered by using GPS devices on vehicles.

Bracelets and anklets equipped with GPS are used by courts to keep track of people on probation. Some high security prisons also use GPS equipped anklets and bracelets for prisoners to help keep up with prisoners. Courts also equip some people on probation for sexual crimes with GPS devices to ensure the public’s safety.

GPS units are used in Law Enforcement patrol cars to log crime scenes and calls for help to better map areas that are high crime areas and more effectively utilize patrol units in areas most needed.

Uses for GPS in Law Enforcement will continue to evolve and given time Courts will make clear the different uses part of the continuing arsenal to better protect ordinary citizens.
